There are travel experiences that are beautiful because of how they look, and then there are those that make you stop and think about the story behind what you're seeing. The Shea Butter Museum in Accra is one of those places, a celebration of shea butter, African beauty traditions and the generations of knowledge behind one of the continent's most recognisable natural ingredients. By Hamamat Africa, it first opened during Ghana's Year of Return in 2019.

Growing up in Africa, shea butter is something many of us know without knowing its full story. It's the little jar in someone's bathroom, the thing our mothers and grandmothers used on their skin and hair. Seeing the different forms of shea butter displayed across the museum makes you realise just how much history sits behind something that can seem so ordinary.

The display that immediately caught our attention was the Global Shea Wall. It showcases 21 different types of shea butter sourced from across Africa, with countries including Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Niger. It felt like looking at a map of Africa through something as simple, and as culturally significant, as shea butter.

The experience goes beyond the displays. You learn the traditional process of making shea butter, from selecting and grinding the nuts through to boiling and producing the finished butter, and there are opportunities to meet women artisans who have preserved these techniques across generations. That connection to women and traditional craftsmanship is at the heart of the story.

Globetrot & Gather says

We love experiences like this because they give you something beyond a pretty photograph. You leave having learnt something. The Shea Butter Museum is a reminder that Africa has always had its own beauty rituals, wellness practices and knowledge systems, long before many of these ingredients became global beauty trends. Perhaps that's our favourite part of travelling: finding the story behind things we thought we already knew.
